A competition for KS1 and KS2/KS3
Our 2023 poetry competition was inspired by the work of Valerie Bloom. The theme was 'special people' and we asked children to write a poem using 'You are' as inspiration.
We put together some lesson resources that could be used in school to support a lesson or series of lessons to accompany the competition. This includes an introduction to Valerie Bloom that can be used in an assembly.
We were delighted that Valerie Bloom officially launched the competition. Watch her special message to everyone taking part.

There were prizes for the top three entrants and their schools.
Entrants received:
- a copy of a Valerie Bloom book
- their poem displayed in local library
- their poem featured on the Hackney Services for Schools website
Schools received:
- a bookshop voucher
